Vaanam Kottattum was an interesting movie to watch. It had an aesthetic feel to it, with the way the scenes were shot. Each character had their own level of innocence, their own backstory, and their own problems. The movie explored the various kinds of love that a family experiences.
The first half established a certain feeling of comfort that Vikram Prabhu and Aishwarya Rajesh had, living without their father. The story was just getting started as it reached the second half. With Sarathkumar's entry, the real story started. You can sense the discomfort between each of the family members once Sarathkumar is released from jail.
Besides this, each of the love stories is different. Aishwarya Rajesh's story is a confused kind of love. Vikram Prabhu and Madonna Sebastian's love story was shown the least, and when it was shown, it was awkward, I guess.
They dealt more with business, hinting at love. When Madonna's father died, it was clear that there was love going on between Vikram and Madonna, although it did feel out of place. Who basically proposes to someone during their dad's funeral? On the other hand, Radhika and Sarathkumar's story was a more mature story, and it blended well with the movie.
The music in this movie was of a different level. Sid Sriram composed the music for this, and although it sounded great off-screen, it made the movie have the feel of a music video every now and then. It lost part of the serious feel it should've had. The music was also a bit too "bold" (if that's the right word) at some places. His idea of blending Western and Indian styles of music was great. Even the music deserves to be listened to as well. Sid Sriram sang most of the songs in the album, however, which might have been a mistake. (Being honest, I have no idea if that's a mistake or not, it just sounds like something that would have been in a critic review so I added it here too. The songs sounded great in his voice, though. Who knows, maybe it would have been a mistake not to sing it?)
Regardless, this movie deserves to be watched at least once for the performance of each of the actors and actresses. I think that Vikram Prabhu acted his best in this movie.
The one thing about this movie that stood out to me was how they tried to show how a father's affection towards a child can be hard, weird, and sometimes hidden. There's a lot of hidden meanings (GOOD meanings) that can be found in this movie.
