Pattas is a good movie to watch, but it's not something mind-blowing, extraordinary, or spectacular. It felt like a "filler" movie for Dhanush- some movie for him to do that would release between other major projects.
The film follows a fairly stereotypical storyline: The hero starts out in the present, heroine is introduced, a love story happens. Then, the problem shows up, and a flashback is shown for a good portion of the second half. Hero suddenly learns everything about the past, gains all the skill needed, and solves the current issue, making himself look like a hero, and everyone else a sidekick.
I realized that I made it sound boring, but it's not as boring as I made it seem. Mehreen brings a good amount of comedy in the first half, and Dhanush brings a fair amount of action in the second half. The second half kind of dragged, but it was brought back at the end.
With all this going on, something was lacking. The name "Pattas" for the movie didn't bring that same effect that a firecracker does. There wasn't much surprise to it. The idea of using Adimurai instead of other martial arts was good. It brought back tradition.
If this movie released a couple years ago (maybe pre-Baahubali), then it would have done/been much better.
